Hand-Poured Scented Candles
Label Design, Product Development, and Sales (2019)
In 2019, I embarked on a project to create hand-poured scented candles, driven by my interest in label design. This project required a significant amount of research, experimentation, and creativity. The first step in the label-creation process was calculating the circumference of the candle tins. After researching, I found the circumference would be about 10 inches for the containers I had. I quickly sketched out a layout for the labels, focusing on women as the central subjects. Using Pinterest for reference, I was inspired by African textiles, specifically Kente Cloth, to create patterned backgrounds. Once the sketches were complete, I redrew them digitally using Procreate on my iPad and printed the designs on sticker paper. After hand-cutting each label, I applied them to the candle tins once the candles were poured.Initially, I planned to make 24 candles, but three didn’t come out as expected, leaving me with 21 successful products. The candles received positive feedback, with suggestions to use beeswax and raise the price to $20. While I sold all the candles for $12 each, the experience provided valuable insights into product development, branding, and customer interaction. If I were to pursue this venture again, I would consider collaborating with an experienced candle maker to refine the product even further.
